Book Review: Keeping Faith in an Age of Reason by Jason Lisle

Book Review: Keeping Faith in an Age of Reason by Jason Lisle

What a great idea! That is precisely what I thought when I first saw this book. Middle school, high school, and college classes are full of  'scholars' who dismiss the bible because of the supposed 'contradictions'.  This resource helps readers to see answers to over 400 biblical passages which may seem contradictory at first. The writer does an excellent job answering common  (and uncommon) questions.

The introduction to the book even gives instruction on logic and reason, giving a very understandable tutorial on the terms that will help interpret the meat of the book.

The meat of the book is split into categories for chapters. The chapters are designed with questions based on passages from the bible with possible contradictions.

Chapter headings include:
1. Quantitative Differences
2. Names, Places, Genealogies
3. Timing of Events
4. Cause and Effect
5. Differences in Details
6. Yes or No?

Each chapter has a number of passages and an explanation of why they do not contradict one another. These explanations will help readers not only understand those specific scriptures, but also apply reasoning skills to verse which are not included in the book.

I am so glad to have this resource for my kids to learn how to reason with those who want to convince them not to believe in the bible. Also, I can't wait for my eighth grade son to read the introduction to learn logic skills which will help him in many areas of life and education.

I also love that the book includes an index of bible passages that makes it easy to look up specific bible verses that seem troublesome.

The end of the conclusion makes a statement that underscores the whole approach of the book:
"The Christian can rest assured that the Bible really is the Word of God. People have attempted to disprove, destroy, and discredit the text. But they only succeed in destroying their own position. The Word of the Lord endures forever (1 Peter 1:25)." --Jason Lisle

If you would like to understand how to reasonably and logically read and understand scripture, this book is a great addition to your library.

Isaiah 1:18 says, "Come now, let us reason together..."

*Masterbooks provided me with a digital copy of this book to review, but they encouraged me to give an honest review of the book and no suggestion on things to include or keep out of the review.
